Rutherglen is set to host its first full Landemer Day in four years this Saturday, following the health and safety concerns of last year's event.

The organisers behind Landemer Day are expecting a bright celebration after the Main Street gala was severely curtailed due to strong winds last June.

Landemer committee chair Jim Nixon told Lanarkshire Live about how he expects this year's event to go off without a hitch.

He said: "Last year was the first year that something like that has happened.

"The good thing about it was that we were able to put into practice our plan B, and we still got to carry out the pageant side of it.

"The only thing that was disappointing was on the Main Street, but it was a major health and safety issue with the stalls blowing over.

"It was disappointing for us but majorly for those setting up stalls.

"I am assured by Jordan, who puts the stalls up, that it won't be an issue this year. Things at the moment are going as well as expected, and I hope that will continue."

The day will be officially kicked off around 11.30am when the 2023 Landemer Queen, Ruby Noble, Ladies in Waiting, Queen's Champion Cpl Daniel Stoker, and Dowager Queen, Nell Gray, travel into the Main Street led by a pipe band.

Rutherglen High School pupil Ruby Noble will be crowned Landemer Queen by Mrs Margaret MacFarlane.

Alongside Ruby, girls from multiple local high schools will make up the Ladies in Waiting, including Lunasha Mungara and Aimee McLaughlin of Trinity High School, Zoe Van Den Brink and Molly McNee of Stonelaw High School and Carly Roberts and Emma Brown of Cathkin High School.

The Queen's entertainment consists of the Cambuslang Parish Church Pipe Band, The Performance Academy and the Rutherglen & Cambuslang Rock ‘n’ Pop Chorus.

Jim added: "The finest young people of the area will entertain the crowd and our Landemer Queen is a real gem."

From 1pm, more performers will entertain locals like the Bronx Show Band, Robyn Taylor, Jeremy Levif and Simon Sims.

Roughly 40 stalls will be set up on the Main Street by local charities and vendors, alongside a selection of fairground rides, face painting and a balloon modeller.

The fun doesn't stop there, as youngsters will be able to experience what it is like in an army transport vehicle and fire engine, coupled with a chance to meet their Junior Cup finalist Glencairn heroes.
