Studio Ghibli's 2004 feature film Howl's Moving Castle draws viewers into a wildly imaginative fantasy world inspired by Diana Wynne Jone's titular novel. Recently, Ghibli's official online storefront unveiled two new products that will "transport" Ghibli fans into the realm of Hayao Miyazaki's iconic flick.
Donguri Sora's "Calcifer Antique Tray" and "Howl's Moving Castle Colored Disk Keychain" were recently added to the site's digital catalog. The latter depicts the multicolored portal that Howl uses to travel to various locations in the movie. The brass-colored back of the keychain is adorned with a detailed engraving of the castle itself. The Calcifer tray depicts the fire demon huddled under a frying pan. Including tax, the keychain and tray cost 2,200 yen (US$14.69) and 4,180 yen (US$27.91), respectively. Readers can check out official photos of both products below.
Several of the best Hayao Miyazaki movies have just received some renewed merchandise perfect for the winter via Studio Ghlibi's official store.
While these items are not part of a single set, both pay tribute to specific details from Howl's Moving Castle. Each colored region on the keychain depicts its corresponding region name from the film -- except for the black section, which "only Master Howl knows" (although the original book reveals far more about this mysterious location). Likewise, the Calcifer tray is a playful callback to the movie's famous "bacon and eggs" scene. The latter is approximately 2.7 inches wide, making it ideal for small pieces of candy or jewelry. However, it can also be used as a coaster for drinking glasses. The tray is made of a sturdy zinc-based alloy, giving it an antique-style appearance and texture.
The plot of Howl's Moving Castle revolves around a young woman named Sophie who runs a hat shop with her mother and sisters. One day, she is accosted by two shady guardsmen and subsequently rescued by a mysterious wizard named Howl. Their meeting irritates an infamous sorceress known as the Witch of the Waste, who places a powerful curse on Sophie. Now trapped inside the body of a 90-year-old woman, Sophie departs in order to find a way to break the spell. Shortly thereafter, she discovers Howl's "castle" -- a rubbish heap powered by a wise-cracking fire demon named Calcifer -- and is employed by the titular wizard as a cleaning lady. As time passes, Sophie realizes that Howl is also suffering from a spell that is slowly stripping away his humanity.
Studio Ghibli returns its Howl's Moving Castle and Whisper of the Heart mugs to its online store, with the unique artwork easily stealing hearts.
Miyazaki's fantasy classic recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in the US with a fresh theatrical run. As part of Ghibli Fest 2024, select venues hosted a special series of screenings from Sept. 26-Oct. 3. Reportedly, Howl's Moving Castle earned over $2.38 million during its first weekend back in theaters, demonstrating how the movie's appeal has withstood the test of time. North American film distributor GKIDS and Fathom Events will close out this year's Ghibli Fest with showings of My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Pom Poko and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013).
Depending on the viewer's geographical location, Studio Ghibli's film library is available on Max or Netflix.
When an unconfident young woman is cursed with an old body by a spiteful witch, her only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions in his legged, walking castle.
